By special request, the Forum is now open for business. I’m working right now to get the look to fit my site, so you’ll have to deal with it for the time being, but at least you can now do something besides be bored to tears reading my weblog. Just try to keep coments to their appropriate forum. That is all.

Facing the anger of an entire city, one pitch at a time

Friday, June 30th, 2000

I’m sitting in a crowd of nearly 47,000. The Mets are trailing Atlanta 6-4 going into the bottom of the 8th. The bullpen door opens, and he dashes out at a full gallop.

And that’s when things really got interesting.

Yes, I was fortunate enough to be witness to John Rocker’s return to New York City since making a handful of disparaging remarks in a Sports Illustrated article which earned him a month long suspension and a reputation as a uniteligent racist.

It’s was an intense feeling that washed over everyone there. The crowd was loud enough to drownd out the passing jets from LaGuardia. Still, with all the emotion shown, I only saw two bottles thrown from the entire crowd. I guess the fact that there was an army of cops scattered about the entire stadium helped keep everyone in check.

To begin with, Rocker seemed a bit shakey. With every wind-up, the crowd noise would swell, and with every call of “Ball” the masses cheered as if the Mets had just taken the NL pennant. At one point, Rocker was behind Robin Ventura 3-1 in the count, and in my opinion was close to losing control of the situation. But Robin swung on a high fastball that would have surely been called Ball Four.

And that changed everything.

Rocker proceded to regain total control. He finished the inning 1-2-3, and the Braves never looked back. The crowd wasted all of it’s energy booing John in the 8th that there was none left to try and cheer the Mets on for a comeback in the 9th. A very anti-climatic ending to a slice of baseball history. But at least I can say “I was there”.

Personally underrated

I’ve been giving the Fun Lovin’ Criminals follow-up to Come Find Yourself a lot of play time at work this week, and I hate to admit it, but I highly under-rated the album when I first listen to it, and I’m sorry I haven’t listened to 100% Colombian more.

See, momma always told you “Never judge a book by its cover”, lest you miss out on a good thing.

In a good place at the moment

Ever have that feeling of complete contentment? Like everything in the world around you was fine and dandy, things are all going your way, and nothing will ever change it again? Last night I was blessed with just such a feeling.

Granted, it’s not like anything earth shattering or life changing happened yesterday, but all the little things fell into place. The dinner I made for my friend Abbey was appreciated, and we caught up on times, both old and new. I was able to lend an ear and a lead foot to Sue as I drove her to Seaside. Wrap it up with phone calls to Don and Jesse, and I’d call it a rather rewarding night, in a social sense.

As for today, I’ll have the pleasure (that’s if it doesn’t rain) of watching Mr. John Rocker of the Atlanta Braves get abused by a packed stadium of Mets faithful. And even though I’m a die-hard Yankee fan, for tonight, I’d just like to say “Let’s go Mets”!
