Wednesday, February 28th, 2001Last night I found myself sitting at H&R Block getting my taxes done, and after hearing the bad news I kind of wish I didn’t. They told me I owe over $600 this year. I almost broke down crying at the desk when they told me that….
Compare and contrast
Monday, February 26th, 2001The NY Times had an interesting write-up (pre-Grammy) on how Eminem is beseiged by moralists, while Steely Dan gets a free ride with their tales of depravity. I think this passage sums up the major difference nicely:
"Steely Dan’s songwriters, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, get a free pass from the watchdogs of content because it’s understood that they are, like most artists, professional liars, otherwise known as storytellers. Mr. Becker and Mr. Fagen, like many novelists, screenwriters and playwrights, create sleazeballs and empathize enough to make them believable."
For most of their careers, Steely Dan have written songs with characters pulled from rank and file of the rouges gallery, but because they’re telling it from a detacted point of view, it’s more like reading some kind of pulp novel instead of watching an episode of America’s Most Wanted, which is what I liken Eminem’s music to. With him, you get more of a sense that he would, could, or has done every act he sings about.
Elsewhere, the legal system is working
Monday, February 26th, 2001Two window dressers in Chicago were caught stealing from work and using E-Bay to fence their stolen goods. Seems kind of poignant considering what happened this morning.
Beaten to the punch
