This will be a night that I will never forget. A night that will live in infamy. A long and twisted tale. Set your face to stunned, and lets begin….
I got off the train after an extremely long day at work. I was looking forward to getting in my car and getting home to get my house ready for my Halloween party this Friday night. My mind was on things like costumes and laundry as I crossed the parking lot when I realized there was an empty space where my car was that morning. A phone call to the Little Silver police confirmed my suspicion.
My car was towed because of warrants from parking tickets — Mistake #1.
Aggravation like that I didn’t need. They sent a car to pick me up and take me to the station where the officer did a quick frisk, placed my handy dandy commuter bag in the trunk of his car, and brought me to the station. They led me into a room to begin the paperwork process, while my bag was brought into another that I could see through a lovely 4′ x 2′ pane of glass. The officer said I could get my checkbook as soon as he finished searching my bag.
That’s when he found the jar of Marijuana — Mistake #2.
Oh, you didn’t know? That’s right kids, I smoke pot. I happened to have the jar with me because I forgot to take it out of my bag after visiting a friend (who will remain nameless). As soon as the officer mentioned searching my bag however, my memory snapped right back into focus and life played out in slow motion. I knew I was screwed, so I didn’t try to make up any stories — I took it like a man.
Now I stand to face heavy fines and the loss of my driver’s license anywhere from 30 to 180 days. My fingerprints and photo are now on record. I may be able to have this one offence cleared from my record if I fly straight and don’t so much as sneeze the wrong way some six months from now, but that’s the furthest thought from my mind at the moment.
I expect to hear from my family and friends about this one. I expect all kinds of questions and all kinds of statements. Do I feel bad? Yes. About getting caught, having to make my sister drive all the way to pick me up, but not about why I had the jar in the first place.
I will not apologize for the way I choose to live my life. I have lived my life the way I though others wanted me to for way too long. I know who and what I am now. I am a man with a police record, a penance to pay, and for one shining moment in the Little Silver police department, the stupidest man on the face of the earth.

So, I just have one question. What reason did have for searching your bag. I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV, but it is my understanding the police need what they call “probable cause” to search your belongings. We shll chat more. Me thinks me smell a rat.
I totally agree Don. They have no right to search your bag if you’re just going to the station to pay tickets. Searching your bag is unrelated, I thought even if a warrant is out. You called them, they didn’t arrest you!
As much as I’d like to agree with you guys, the probably did have the right since I had warrants from both Little Silver and Manchester for traffic violations. They were actually writing up an arrest statement when the other bit of nastiness unfolded. I’m not a legal expert, but I don’t think I have a leg to stand on in this one.
