"Chicken Little was in the woods one day when an acorn fell on her head. It scared her so much she trembled all over. She shook so hard, half her feathers fell out.
‘Help! Help! The sky is falling! I have to go tell the king!’"
While I was waiting for my train this morning, I overheard the sickening news of American Airlines jet crashing by JFK. Of course, the first thought through the minds of everyone there was easy to predict: terrorists. God, please don’t let it be another terrorist attack.
It even caught me for the few moments between first hearing the news and actually letting my brain digest it. But it didn’t (and still doesn’t from what I’ve read) follow the rhyme or reason of any attack I could remember or imagine happening. I actually spoke up and said this in a room full of complete strangers; the unspoken truth that they all wanted to hear, to calm their doubts. Once it was out in the open, the talk slowly returned to the upcoming 70° November days and how my friend Jesse might very well be able to have the Thanksgiving Bar-B-Q he keeps joking about.
As I sat on the train, my thoughts turned to Chicken Little crying over the acorn falling on her head. The world has changed, and for years and years to come we’re going to be catching ourselves in moments like this — waiting for the sky to fall down around us, as sad as that may be.
