Of Galactic proportions

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

Some more light has been shed on the split between Galactic and Theryl “The Houseman” DeClouet. This seems to have been coming for a long time by the sound of this article, but at least everyone is splitting on good terms.

Also somewhat related is the news that Corrosion of Conformity has a new album coming out and Galactic drummer Stanton Moore layed down some tracks for them. I drool in anticipation….

Posting in the key of C

The usual Monday morning office routine was interrupted by video clips, embarrassed coworkers and laughter — kind of a nice diversion, actually. The source of all the hullabaloo was a collection of photos and the aforementioned vid clips from a Saturday night karaoke session that some of us braver souls took part in.

The venue for all this excitement was the Carriage House in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood. Rather nice sports lounge with decent prices on drinks, a couple of pool tables and a wide selection of songs to embarrass one’s self with.

Good friend Joanna was even along for the festivities, freshly back from field studies in Latin and South America. She even received a purple heart during the evening when viciously assaulted by a wine glass to the face during a headbanging episode. For those of you who didn’t know, karaoke has turned into a full contact sport.

In spite of the shattered glass and streaming blood, good times were had by all. I plan to add my blackmail material to the site durring the week in an effort to supplement the fine collection Don already posted.

Also of note, if you’re ever in the mood for some good thai food and find yourself in Park Slope, you’d be insane not to stop in at Rice Thai Kitchen.

Sizzling sounds on calm waters

Thursday night capped off my four in four boat cruise show stretch, this time with cousin Erin as my designated partner in crime. The attraction: Topaz playing two sets on the deck of the Half Moon, brought to you courtesy of the fine folks at Rocks Off.

Topaz and company were on during their performance and have yet to let me down at any of the performances I’ve been to. He looked a little trimmer than the last time I saw his act. He also ditched his trademark hat for this performance, which threw me a little bit. So much in fact that when he interjected in a conversation Erin and I were having I didn’t even know who I was talking to.

Sad, really. I go to a show and can’t even recognize the face of the man I paid to see. Gotta work on that.

We couldn’t have asked for better conditions on deck, but inside the canopy it was a little hot. A few more open flaps and maybe a fan or two would have helped. Still, it was only a minor point in the grand scheme — I was gonna sweat regardless, either from the hot conditions or from dancing to the infectious music. Two sets were played, with a mixture of old and new tracks. A new album’s worth of material is said to be forthcoming, so I’m gonna have to keep my eyes on the web for that.

All in all a great way for me to end my Rocks Off sessions for the season. Time to start lining up shows at the myriad of land-locked venues the metro NY area has to offer.

Statisticly speaking, it’s music to my ears

I came across the wonderful Audioscrobbler a couple of weeks ago. Add one of their plugins to your audio player of choice and it’ll start compiling a list of what you listen to (mine is right here).

But the fun continues! They take that list and then use it to fuel Last.fm, a personalized net radio station. That’s just icing on the cake if you ask me.

(Hat tip to Designweenie for pointing me in the right direction)
