Umphrey’s rocks the Big Apple

Tuesday, December 14th, 2004

The past friday night was I was privileged to see on fantastic musical performance. The playing was fast and furious. The sound was dead-on perfect. The energy, both from the band and the audience, was pure electricity. Plain and simple, it was a great night for live music and a good showing by the mid-west’s own Umphrey’s McGee.

Umphrey's McGeee at Irving Plaza - Dec. 10, 2004

Just about everything seemed to go right during the performance; right up to the second song when they overloaded the amps during “Nemo”. Still, the band never dropped a note and the crew working that night at Irving Plaza had things back to normal too sweet. Some of the highlights for me were “In the Kitchen”, “JaJunk”, “Wife Soup” and two ridiculously good covers of “Baba O’Riley” and “Hot for Teacher”.

These boys got some chops.

This was also the second show I attended where I was able to purchase the performance just minutes after it had ended — a 3-disc, two plus hour show. The wave of the future, my friends. Too bad I didn’t have a pen with me, because I probably could have gotten it signed by guitarist Brendan Bayliss. As I was waiting on line at the coat check the band was being ushered out past us. I did at least get to compliment him on a good set and shake the man’s hand. Good enough in my book.

Links and what not

Let’s see what nuggets of joy and wonder my semi-daily reading material has brought us today:

  • The dates for Bonnaroo 2005 have been confirmed — June 10th throught the 12th. The location is the same as always.
  • The NY state senate has voted to rework parts of the Rockefeller drug laws and reduce the draconian nature of the sentences.
  • Samsung is going to have a hand in building theworld’s tallest building, the Burj Tower in Dubai. Total height upon completion will be 2,640 feet and some 160 floors, higher than the planned hight of the Freedom Tower.
  • For some holiday Flash fun, you might want to try your hand at this ingenious little snowflake maker.
  • T-Mobile has added Ringback Tones, or as they call them “CallerTunes”, to their list of services. These are different from ringtones. They replace the ringing sound the caller would hear when calling you with something else such as music or other recorded material. Another revenue stream for the cell phone companies to cash in on, I suppose.
  • I’ve just found out there’s a Cowboy Bebop game for PS2 under development — announced a few months ago at E3. I just hope they make a good game, because I’ve seen far too games based on licensed materials that just plain suck.
  • Here’s a handy, dandy digit saver for table saw users. SawStop is a system that can recognize the difference between wood and flesh and bring a blade spinning at 4,000 rpm to a stop in just 5 milliseconds. That can save a lot of people a lot of hand surgery.
  • Take a trip down memory lane and enjoy some clasic 80′s commercials.
  • Some users on Flikr have done a little
flashlight writing. Very cool looking. You can make your own flashlight pics with this technique.
  • NASA plans to send a robot into space to repair the Hubble Telescope, but a panel from the National Academy of Sciences says it would be better to send real astronauts up to fix things. Would NASA be willing to dare another shuttle launch yet?

And finally…

  • Tired of having to endure someone else’s cell phone call in public? Maybe you should drop one of these “SHHH” cards on them, provided by the Society for HandHeld Hushing. Funny, useful and brilliant!

You’ve now been enlightened and/or entertained. That will be $3.57 please.

RANA, revived and publicized

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

JamBase has a long-ass article up on one of the hardest working, rocking-est bands around today: RANA. A little nugget of joy from the write-up about the sharing of the songwriting duties:

“Since there are three main songwriters in the group, (Matt, Scott, Andrew) and each of us sing very differently, each song is treated differently,” Andrew Southern tells us. “The voice is determined by the lyrics, yes, because if it was determined by anything else it would be commercial appeal, and we’re not interested in that.”

Seems the boys have finished their follow-up album to “Here in the USA”, entitled “What It Is” (both of which are available on their merch page). As much as I’d love to splurge for the CD now, I think I’m gonna wait for their upcoming show at Tribeca Rock Club on the 30th and just grab it there. It’ll be my after-Christmas present to myself.

New additions

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

Yesterday morning, good friend Don became a father for the third time as the Donahue clan gained another member. Originally broken in the comments, I figured such joyous news should be moved to the forefront. As the new papa tells it:

One more thing, I had another awesome baby this morning!!!!! Meredith Anne Donahue, 7lbs 2 oz. 18 1/2 inches, full head of dark wavy hair and cute as a button!!!!

Congrats Don and Mary. Mission accomplished. You can stop procreating now. ^_^

Dimebag Darrell murdered

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

Those of you who follow metal music are gonna find this a little hard to read: Dimebag Darrell is dead, along with four others. The shooting took place at a Damageplan concert in Ohio. The shooter also died at the scene. Dimebag is best known for his work with Pantera. Much respect out to you DB. You will be missed.

Update: The mainstream press has got a hold of the story now.

Update 2: In-depth details regarding the incident.
