Alex Trebek is the devil incarnate, or so I’ve been told

Sudden death, Big Quiz Thing style!

Finally! A venue where all those years of collecting pointless knowledge can be put to creative and constructive use! Last night I spent some time hanging with Bready, Mike and a host of new faces down at The Big Quiz Thing, one of those bar trivia deals. Lots of fun if you’ve never tried it, and only $5 to get in. Now how many places in New York can you have that much fun for such a little financial investment?

Our team, “8 Shades to the Left” (Or was it “8 Shades of Left”? I forget.), came in 11th place out of 17 teams, but within sight of the leaders — I think their name was “The Fantastic Fornicators” or something of the like. Hey, at least we didn’t have to go up against the likes of Fryloc or Wayne “The Brain”.

Oh, and the show host had some not so kind words about Alex Trebek. Maybe he stole his candy from him as a kid or something, but there was some real hatred there.

A wedding type thing

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Been a while since I had a chance to don the old monkey suit for a good reason, but good friends Julia and Rob gave me such a reason this past Saturday when they had their wedding. Yeah, I’m sure that was the reason they tied the not. Nothing about loving, honoring and respecting one another. It was all so they could force their closest friends to dig out their good clothes. Yeah, that had to be it.

Unless you were at the ceremony itself you probably won’t have much interest in looking at the pictures. Well, if you like looking at pictures of people getting drunk, then maybe they’re up your alley after all. Enjoy.

Bombs in London

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

The details are still coming in fast and furious, but what’s known for sure is that this morning London was hit by 4 bomb explosions (also BBC Timeline, Bloomberg) — three in their Underground rail system and on one of their busses.

The timing is surreal; all of this comes a little over 24 hours after winning the 2012 Olympic bid and while the G8 convention is going on to the north in Scotland. In scale and scope, this attack is similar to the Madrid 3/11 attacks. So far no one has taken credit for the attacks, and the police claim there were no prior warning.

More than 30 total fatalities so far confirmed, with more to come (the number of fatalities on the bus area as of yet unknown). The world stands waiting once again.

A process of elimination

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

The night owl in me kept me going through to the early morning hours, which allowed me to partake in the drama of the 2012 Olympic host city election process (explained here). The New York dream died around 6:30 this morning, eastern time, having been preceded by Moscow and followed by Madrid. That leaves London and Paris fighting for the right to host.

And the winner is…London — mild shock!

Fireworks over the New York skyline

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

For the second time in as many years, I got to take in New York’s 4th of July fireworks from the Jersey side of the Hudson. This time it was just a few blocks from my apartment in Weehawken instead of a few miles up river in Edgewater. I even managed to remember my camera and took some pics of it all, even though the majority of them didn’t come out that good.

Next year I resolve head to either Manhattan or Brooklyn to check them out. I mean, look at the pics you can get from over there! Photographer’s envy, I suppose. Oh well, click in to enjoy what I have then go to BrooklynVegan to enjoy the real meaty pics.
