Blue Rocks rejuvination

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

Did some traveling for the holiday weekend out to the wilds of Lennhartsville, PA and the Blue Rocks Campground for some R&R with the old shore gang. On the whole a good trip, though rain killed a lot of the hang out time on Friday night and a freakish hay fever attack killed me on Saturday night. But come Sunday the whole trip paid off in spades as I got to add a few more miles on my Appalachian Trail total. Not much for distance, but hard to beat the views and activities therein.

Hell, I even got to go climbing inside a cave for the first time. The experience was just as terrifying as it was exhilarating. We were at least 1,500 feet up at the one cave entrance, so a wrong step would have been very nasty. And the other entrance was about 35 feet straight up. I’m proud to say I conquered both and think I’ll have to take in some of those caverns I saw advertised on the back side of Virginia on my way to the ‘roo.

The trek in the woods was not without peril. GPS was found lacking (when it was remembered at all), solo hikers from the group took tumbles and the rest of us had a run-in with a baby rattlesnake. Scrapes, scratches and stories for sure, but no broken bones and so far I’ve hear of no poison ivy cases either. Par for the course.

The drive back to civilization was nice, leisurely and cathartic. The pictures are splendid and relaxing, so I figured I’d share some of the better ones with you all. Check inside for the goodies and make sure you enjoy them all, m’kay?

O’Connor resigns and half the nation holds its breath

Friday, July 1st, 2005

Out of all the reasons I had for not wanting George W. to win re-election, this was by far the biggest.

The writing has been on the wall for a while that Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist would be leaving the court at some point before G.W.’s term is up, and he’d get to leave his legacy on the landscape of the court. But that would just be a conservative voice for a conservative voice. The true fear was that one of the more liberal minded Justices would decide to step down on his watch.

That fear became reality today as Justice Sandra Day O’Connor announced her resignation (also here). This is crushing at first glance, and has the possibility to make all that “nuclear option” hullabloo we waded though over lower lever court appointments look like a walk on the beach.

The White House will be gearing up for battle, I’m sure. I just hope the nation pays close and careful attention to this. And I pray that the rest of the court can stay intact until after 2008, though I’m certain that’s quite a pipe dream on my part.

Of feet, eyes, sounds and campfires

Bless blogs for making it easier to keep track of the going ons of friends. Case in point, Nick and Vivian. Viv’s massage business is getting good press in the local paper, while Nick’s peepers have been lazered in an attempt to improve his vision.

As for me? Well, just the regular bitching, moaning, and hi-quality show pics, all of which I’m about to leave behind for the weekend as I head to Blue Rocks for some camping and hiking with the Jersey Shore gang. Guess I better go get my provisions taken care of and get on the road, huh?
