Unwinding the holiday madness

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

So did you all have a happy whatever-it-is you celebrate? My Christmas was good, though there were some bumpy spots. I’ll start with those and end with the good.

Shopping and shipping wise, there were some issues. Some of the gifts I got my sister and her fiance they already had — something I didn’t find out in some cases until they were unwrapping the gifts themselves. Oops! Looks like I need better lines of communication next year. But the topper had to be my issues with Amazon, which let me down for the first time ever, with one of the packages I ordered never showing up. Funny, because this was supposedly the first one to be shipped out. Did someone in my building swipe it? Did the USPS misplace it, or even worse, send it to the wrong address? Well, regardless of the hows and whys, it’s late and I have to spend time trying to sort this out. One thing I’m sure of is that the Amazon support pages and contact forms suck — you have to jump through too many hoops for help. Redesign is desperately needed.

With those two issues aside, the rest of my Christmas was great. Got to see family and friends, got a few nice gifts (the highlights of which were slippers and the keyboard I’ve been pining over), and had a nice amount of time off to enjoy all of the above. Good friend Teresa also had some good news to share after finding out that Mayor Bloomberg read a book of hers to sick kids in a Bronx hospital on Christmas.

Now all I have to do is get together New Year’s plans, which I’m in the process of doing as I write this. Tonight I guess I’ll be sitting at home with toasty feet as I continue to try to figure out how to play the theme to The Legend of Zelda on the keys — something I stumbled upon by accident last night. Good times. ^_^

Have you ever fallen down the rabbit hole?

My inbox this morning contained an intriguing question to Cecil over at “The Straight Dope” regarding Alice in Wonderland and psychological testing — mainly why do they ask if you enjoyed reading it?

Your paranoia about such things is understandable–what’s a question like that supposed to gauge? Whether you like fantasy? Hookah smoking? Little girls?

Interesting lazy day reading material.

Yet another blog for me to ignore making posts to

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long, but my freelancing company — Creek Bed Industries — finally has its own blog. Real bare bones stuff for the time being, but at least it’s up and running. If I have anything to say about design, web tech, software, etc. it’ll probably end up over there.

I’m not much for making New Year’s resolutions, but if I were to make some for ‘06 I think it would be along the lines of “redesign all my web sites”. They’re either using very slightly modified default templates provided by the software running them or designs that are a few years old. My portfolio is so out of sync it’s not even funny.

Strikeout

Just before things started to get out of hand and people started being sent to jail, the NYC transit strike is over. Things start running again at 12:01 am tongiht and the whole system is supposed to be ready for the Friday morning rush. Of course all this comes just a few hours too late to help me, as it’s more or less killing the expected turnout for a planned karaoke session tongiht in Manhattan.

An entertaining tale for those conspiracy buffs out there

Ever since Dave Chappelle got his big payday to make season 3 and beyond of his show, then totally flaked out mid-production, there have been questions as to why. What really happened is anyone’s guess, but anti-social.com has put together their own take called “The Chappelle Theory“.

An interesting story, but seeing as how the word “bullshit” is stamped over the title on the web site, I’m guessing that’s all it is. ^_^
