Post #2028 and other randomly sequential numbers

Monday, January 30th, 2006

That’s an awful lot of posts to have been making since I started this blog thing. Of course, I’m also finding that I’ve an equally large amount of scratch paper notes and mangled pictures and trying to sort through everything has been a real pain. Since the beginning of the year I’ve been moving some of that mess into the digital world — more specifically, into a wiki I’ve been using to get a handle on the train wreck that is my mind.

Also, let it be known that the NIkon Coolpix S4 is bad at low-light picture taking, at least if you take concert pics and the like. I tried to love my new camera, but in the end just annulled the marriage and ran back to Canon with my new PowerShot SD550. Fast starts up times, a true refinement of already good controls — solid indeed. About the only thing I’ll miss is the 10x optical zoom the Nikon gave me. Ah well….

The end approaches for “The West Wing”

Sadly I just read that my favorite TV show, “The West Wing”, is coming to an end this spring. One less bit of “Must See TV” in my life — it shall be missed.

Silver shades and digital sketching

2006-01-23-sketching

Kind of a gray and overcast day today, but it’s not as bad as the weather reports were making in out to be for the city. No sleet or freezing rain for my morning commute, thought the clouds have descended from the heavens to chop the skyline off at the shoulders. Rather symbolic, considering my head feels like it’s in a similar fog. Sleep deprivation can do that to you sometimes.

At least I didn’t waste all that time awake last night doing nothing, like I have so many times before. With the workload I have between Lime Group work and the one or two freelance projects, my own sites have languished behind design-wise. And to be honest, after staring at Photoshop all day at work, it’s been hard to drag myself back in front of the desk after I get home to do it all again for my own endeavors.

I’m finally putting that Wacom tablet I bought back when I first made my switch to the Mac to good use, as you can see by the slice o’ screenshot attached. Very early work indeed, but a better result than I expected. Hopefully that will drive me to be ambitious and continue working on things with some regularity.

Then again, this is me we’re talking about…. ^_^

Three days in summation

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

It’s rainy, dark and late. I’m still up, digging around with blogging software and a text editor prepping for the work week ahead. Of course, this will all double as work to do some new things around here too, but we all know how those promises usually go.

Kind of an eventful weekend. Concert with Ryan and David on Friday night, where I’m starting to see that maybe my new camera might not be up to snuff for my needs. Saturday Shannon came up to join me and some of my New York crew at Karaoke in Park Slope, which was a great time for everyone involved. Early on Sunday, Big Truck and Jesse were up here to do some jamming, which turned into a very focused session where we actually completed a song from the standpoint of guitars and lyrics. They had with them what amounted to two separate songs and stories and at least from the wordsmithing side of things, I contributed heavily to the process of tying them together. Time to get together a set list of songs (we have at least 4 or 5 whole ones) and get ourselves recorded. Don’t be shocked if there’s a MySpace page set up for this somewhere in the ‘06.

Of course, the biggest news I got over the weekend would have to be the that Jesse and Eileen are having a kid — my head is still swimming over this one. Best of wishes to both of them, though I’m sure they’ll do fine. The numbers of my friends with children continues to grow, and I highly doubt that the scale is going to tip the other direction anytime soon.

Strangely Silent

Friday, January 20th, 2006

Here we are, 19 days into the new year and I have yet to say anything of substance here. Scratch that — I have yet to say anything, period. Oh sure, I’ve done a couple of podcast episodes, sent along emails. answered MySpace invites, etc. I’ve gone out and done things — some of it even worthy of mention. But still, nothing.

No good explanation really, other than I’ve been busy putting energy elsewhere and when it came time to blog I was drained. I’ve been doing a lot of planning and sorting. You see, 2005 was kind of a banner year for me, with milestones both real and self-imagined being passed. Some of them were a decade in the making. So now that they’re gone, I’m left asking “so now what?”. It takes time to answer that question, and I’m still working on it.

One thing of note: I finally managed to get that new camera I wanted to give myself for Christmas, the Nikon Coolpix S4. Very nice indeed, though it still feels a little strange since I’ve been using those Canon PowerShots for so long (and they’re damn fine cameras too). The true test comes tomorrow night when I try it out at a couple of shows, when I put that 10x zoom lens to work.

Thanks to my dad for the post title, not to mention the kick in the ass to get this posted.
