Professional grade links

I actually managed to fit some web and design related reading into my weekend web browsing. Thought I’d share the cream of the crop — that and linking them here will help me find them later on.

Like a freshly cleaned room

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Just when I was getting back into the swing of posting regularly, the underpinnings of the site started breaking down in strange and troublesome ways. First comment counts stopped working, followed by the commenting itself, and finally admin access kept flaking out on me. So this morning, I took the site down for an hour and a half and for all intents and purposes, rebooted it.

I had already been working on cleaning up things on my web host for the better part of the week, and this has been planned for a while now. Of course, with the fragile nature of the content, I was taking my time to make sure nothing got lost in the process. It should have been a lot easier than it was, but by default WordPress lacks an export feature for its content, which frustrated me to no end. Eventually I found a nice export plugin to do the job, but this should be part of the default setup.

I still have some work to do. I’m moving photos around, so old pics are going to be M.I.A. for the time being, and the recently posted ones have lost their formatting info. The sooner I take care of the dull and boring aspects of this, the sooner I can get to work on the redesign.

Clear

Monday, September 11th, 2006

For all my memories of that day five years ago, the one that sticks most in my mind is that of the sky that morning. Clear. Pristine. The most beautiful blue, without a cloud aloft to disturb its tranquility. Just like today.

Evening plans

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Good friend David is getting me out of the house this evening to go see Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. It’s probably a good idea to get me away from the computer for a few hours, because I have a strange feeling that I’m spending most of the weekend in front of it as I continue to clean up this place. Seriously, you would not belive how much crap gets built up when you neglect your site for a couple of months.

Oh, and in case you didn’t notice, the beginning of an About page has sprung up, along with the hasty return of the Contact and Portal pages. Expect more falling code and traffic advisories as the restoration continues….

Update: Some pics of the show are up over at BrooklynVegan.

Viewing the future of the Trade Center

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

It’s been almost five years since the attack on the World Trade Center, and as Ray Nagin stated, the site is still more or less a “hole in the ground“. I’ve been through that hole quite a few times to take the PATH, and I’ll admit that I’ve found it hard at times to visualize just how the whole gigantic site is going to look once the bureaucratic tangle is cleared up and the reconstruction begins en mass.

Enter USA Today with this very nice visual of the site as it’s going to be. Notes on the new buildings and memorials and what’s holding up there progress, along with some audio commentary are all part of the package.
