Three Things for Today: Oct. 31, 2007

Designs “as seen on TV”, the internet wondercompany’s next move, and Arnold talks botany:

  1. The design world meets the land of infomercials with Make My Logo Bigger Cream!  Works on both print and web sites!  ^_^
  2. Looks like Google is set to really weigh in against Facebook (the current darling) and the rest of the social networking landscape with their own OpenSocial networking API.  This should be interesting….
  3. California governor Arnold Schwartzenager is quoted recently as saying about marijuana: “That is not a drug. It’s a leaf.” [via Boing Boing]

Attack of the Phantom Pothole

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I didn’t find out until late this afternoon, but there was a Halloween Party at the office I could have gone to. But I just got my paycheck and had some planned errands to take care of, not to mention I already was out late the night before (see radio taping and concert, respectively). So I decided not to change plans and be responsible.

Well, right now I’m sure my car wishes I hadn’t.

While heading back home through the surface streets of Secaucus (Meadowlands Parkway to pin-point things), I hit a phanton pothole that took out the right rear tire on my car. That sucks enough on its own, but I just bought all-new tires not two months ago, so I certainly wasn’t too happy as I tried to speed through the tire change. Now my only hope is that the rim isn’t too screwed up and I won’t have to dump more money than planned into it this month.

I’m half-tempted to write to the town of Secaucus to tell them they owe me a new tire. At the very least, I think I’m obligated to let them know it’s there to be fixed.

The Weakerthans @ Webster Hall

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Along with the radio taping last night, I also managed to head out and check out some live music in the form of Canadian indie rockers The Weakerthans out at Webster Hall. You can check out the shots I took over at Flickr. Big thanks to David for the free pass in — it certainly helps when you’re still a day away from pay day.

The show itself was pretty good. I was getting a bit of that alt-country vibe mixed in the usual style I hear in Canadian rock (I kept coming back to The Tragically Hip in my mind, though the vocal styles were nowhere close). The lyrics were very solid and there were some very rock-and-roll moments, such as four men holding their guitars aloft while punctuating the drumbeat with power chords.

I’d suggest some tracks to listen into, but hell if I know at this point. Give me a few weeks to get some material to review and then we’ll talk. Of course, if anyone out there has some recommendations, by all means….

Three Things for Today: Oct. 30, 2007

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

First off, don’t believe the timestamps. I’m writing this from the future and posting to the past because I was too busy being awesome last night to actually get a chance to sit and write. But continuity counts a bit with these “Three Thing” posts, so here we are.

Anyway, this is some of what caught my eye yesterday…err, today…maybe tomorrow?:

  1. Two illustrators drawing dueling characters to defeat the one previously posted. It’s the Superest.
  2. The Register digs into the ongoing fair-use battle between Prince and a Pennsylvania mother over her use of “Let’s Go Crazy” in a video of her kid that was pulled from YouTube. If you ever had the chance to see said offending video, you’d see it’s indeed a crazy that the symbol guy is even doing this!
  3. Seriously, I’m gonna try to cut back on the OS X Leopard chatter, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t link to the best nuts-and-bolts review — from Ars Technica, of course.
