Someone Needs to Invest in Some Master Locks

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Now this gives a whole new dimension to the term “data security”.  Seems like CI Host had one of their data centers in Chicago robbed of $15,000 worth of hardware, not to mention whatever data might happen to have bee    n on said hardware.  What’s more, this was the 4th time this one particular colo had been hit.

I’ve never been happier to not be a CI Host customer than I am now.

Three Things for Today: Nov. 4, 2007

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Food for thought, tools for geeks, and I who’s posting what where:

  1. This WWF (no, not wrestling — the World Wildlife Fund) video ad is quite well done: Money makes the world go round, you know.
  2. Trying to get a remote connection working?  Check out YouGetSignal’s Open Ports Tool.  They also have this little Network Location Map.
  3. Here’s a great mash-up map showing recent anonymous edits to Wikipedia entires, and where they’re being done.  Fun to see what pops up.

Your Musical Intermission: Death From Above 1979

While I was cleaning out my email this afternoon, I came across one from Last.fm which included some links to music videos they thought I would like because of my listening habits (which you can dig into here).

While the song and video are not new by any means, the visuals are new to me, so I thought I’d share some of the (already broken up) indie rock/synth rock duo Death From Above 1979, playing “Romantic Rights”:

Three Things for Today: Nov. 3, 2007

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

A veritable cornucopia of unrelated content, all for your consumption:

  1. Former Price is Right host Bob Barker had his signature cause be controling the pet population.  Could new host Drew Carry’s cause be medical marijuana? [via Boing Boing]
  2. What a great showing of Halloween spirit here.  Someone stuck a car horn in a jack-o-lantern to greet trick-or-treaters, and recorded the reactions for us to enjoy.
  3. Someone went through great pains to assemble a collection of 40 CSS layouts to use.  Seeing as how I always seem to want to reinvent the wheel with every design I code out, this might be a handy link to keep around.

DARPA’s Robotic Drivers Exam is Underway

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

The DARPA Urban Challenge is well underway, and at least 3 of the 11 teams have bombed out.  You can check out the webcast if you’re interested in the progress…and you probably should be interested.  I mean, someday you might have to share the road with the descendants of these automated automotive automatons.
