While the song and video are not new by any means, the visuals are new to me, so I thought I’d share some of the (already broken up) indie rock/synth rock duo Death From Above 1979, playing <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Death+From+Above+1979/+videos/Romantic+Rights?

Along with the radio taping last night, I also managed to head out and check out some live music in the form of Canadian indie rockers The Weakerthans out at Webster Hall. You can check out the shots I took over at Flickr. Big thanks to David for the free pass in — it certainly helps when you’re still a day away from pay day.

The show itself was pretty good. I was getting a bit of that alt-country vibe mixed in the usual style I hear in Canadian rock (I kept coming back to The Tragically Hip in my mind, though the vocal styles were nowhere close). The lyrics were very solid and there were some very rock-and-roll moments, such as four men holding their guitars aloft while punctuating the drumbeat with power chords.

I’d suggest some tracks to listen into, but hell if I know at this point. Give me a few weeks to get some material to review and then we’ll talk. Of course, if anyone out there has some recommendations, by all means….

Time for the bi-monthly blog post that has become tradition around these parts. And this time let’s see if I can give a bit more than a little bullet list.

Say Hello to LimeSpot

On the professional side of things, there’s been some launches of note. For one, the hard work of those I’m in the trenches with every day came to fruation as Lime Spot came into being. Wondering what it all is? So are we (kidding!).

For now, it’s little more than another social networking site without as many features, but that’s soon to change and at a fairly fast clip. More importantly for the moment, it is also the new engine under the hood of the LimeWire Music Blog, as you can tell by that stylish new gray bar that tops the site.
Big ups to Dave, Michael, Jorge, Amy, Ryan, and Eric for the fantastic job building this all from scratch. I am truly humbled to be associated with you all.

I can not say this enough!

Speaking of the LimeWire Music Blog…

…it has been sent to the tailors for some changes to its threads. I’m responsible for that little bit (and there’s still much to shine, believe me!). That lovely masthead sketch is by far my favorite aspect, and it’s the first thing I’ve ever created with the aid of my Wacom tablet that I’m proud to put my name on. I fear that might feed my ego to the point where I might actually think I can…draw…or something.

Don’t forget the fun and games!

Now don’t go getting the idea that it’s been all work for me, no sir-ree! I’ve made sure I’ve had my share entertainment. Like catching an Allman Brothers concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center and two separate tapings for the upcoming season of Comedy Central Presents. I’ve even got plans to (finally!) check out Bustle in Your Hedgerow tomorrow night, which will rock me with the time tested sounds of Zepplin being jammed out by four of the most talented musicians from other groups I love.

Adding to the toy chest

And we can’t forget about the toys either. After being without a working iPod for the last few months and dead set against replacing it with one of those video ones until the next product refresh (which now looks like it’ll be on Sept. 5th), I got myself a nice little Shuffle. I love the fact that it’s too light to even be unplugged from the headphones if it accidentally gets knocked off my bag.

It also hooks in nicely to my new set of Roland TD-3SW electronic drums (and by new I mean the ones I bought a month ago and neglected to mention). Yes, I still haven’t given up on the idea that I might one day become tolerable on the damn instrument, but at least now I can practice at 3 in the morning if the mood strikes me and not worry about my neighbors calling the cops on me. Now all I need is to get a few lessons going so I can progress beyond the two or three beats I know.

And this afternoon, I picked up my copy of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. I’ve got high hopes for this game, as it’s the first “must buy” for my Wii since the day I picked up the system and “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess“. Shortly after pressing the submit button on this post, you can bet I’ll be logging in my first hours.

Looks like I’m not sleeping much tonight….

And I mourn it’s canceled status verily, because the 10 episodes they have are brilliant beyond belief.

Set in the late 70′s/early 80′s music world of soft rock superkings, the creators deftly weave in their humorous song creation stories with the likes of Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Dr. Dre, Michael Jackson, Hall and Oates, David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Perry, The Eagles…not to mention my beloved Steely Dan.

You can dig around on the show’s Wikipedia page for more background, or just dive right into the episodes. If you’re crunched for time and want some recommendations, I’d say hit episodes #7 (I Keep Forgettin), #9 (Runnin’ With The Devil), and #10 (FM).

Well, another month long gap between posts. There’s been livin’ of life. There’s been writin’ of posts. There’s been singin’ of songs. Just none of it here. Why? Because somewhere along the line I got it in my skull that I need to keep posts here in some semblance of a chronological order, which means if I get caught behind some perceived roadblock, then the whole water works stop.

Well, as of today I’m making some fundamental changes to try and keep that from happening again. Note the return of the Memories section (currently empty, but there none the less), which will be used for long-form event recaps, photos, videos, and the like.

Anyway…

For those of you interested in my travels to Bonnaroo (and why on earth would you be?), you’ll have to bear with me a bit longer for the video and texual recap of my experiences. But if all you’re looking for is photos of acts like The Police, The White Stripes, Wolfmother, Clutch, Franz Ferdinan, etc. then you’re in luck. I’ve posted some 733 actual, factual pics up at my Bonnaroo 2007 collection on Flickr. Enjoy!

My cyclical habit of post some, hide some repeats once again, but at least with good reason.  Since my trip to Chicago, I’ve been working almost non-stop to design and build-out a new music blog for the fine folks I work for with the intent of launching today. On top of that, I was trying to coordinate plans for the annual trip to Bonnaroo, this time with credentials provided on behalf of another music blog that would get me press and photo privileges.

As of this afternoon, both of these are now done deals. You can pay a visit to the LimeWire Music Blog now (expect tweaks and a revised logo — the name changed while I was off on the road) and expect to see and read all about my Bonnaroo experience over the next few days at BrooklynVegan, here, and my Flickr account.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some content creating to do….

Ever since a chance viewing at a long ago concert, i’ve been a big fan of the vocal stylings of one Reggie Watts — Maktub front man and Soulive contributor.
And while I’m talking music, let me drop some more music-related linkage on you. Nutritional content may vary:

Maktub’s 2001 recording and 2003 release Khronos should be in any soul music lover’s collection.

While cleaning through the numerous blog posts I started, yet never posted, I found this article about the release of Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood’s “Out Louder“. Months after getting said album, I’m still digging it.

As of this moment, Clutch tops my Last.fm account as the most played band, year to date. A lot of that is due to great tracks such as “The Drifter” on great albums such as Jam Room.

My old boss Christian threw me a link to this funny — yet catchy — little ditty: Code Monkey (MP3).

Grab some of the above and make your ears happy.

Back in February, one of my favorite guitarists — Scott Metzger — took a break from his gig playing with New york rockers RANA to link up with trance-rockers Particle.

Well, scratch that for now. From the Particle web site:

It’s with great sadness and surprise that we recently learned Scott Metzger will no longer be a member of Particle. Last week, Scott received unfortunate news of an unforseen family emergency that requires his long term attention. The combination of Particle’s rigorous touring schedule, west coast rehearsals, and upcoming studio projects make it impossible for Scott to commit to both the band and his east coast family.

Not the best of news for Scott, and I wish him and his family the best. But that doesn’t mean that the man won’t be playing. The aforementioned RANA is playing a special Rocks Off Boat Cruise show on the East River to Shea Stadium. I’ve got plans for that afternoon at the moment, but I think that may be changing….

Well, first off, the haircut turned out not to change my outward appearance all that drasticly. About 3 inches or so trimmed from the ends and it’s still down a bit below my shoulders. At least it’s a little cleaner looking. Still, it was nice to sit in that barber’s chair again. That fresh cut feeling is the one thing I miss about having short hair. Shots will show up sooner or later, though tellign the difference will be difficult.

As you may be able to tell from the sudden bursting of content here, I’ve finally got my desktop system up and running with some consistency again. For some reason my G4 tower — the same one I threw a ton of cash and a great many upgrade components into — keeps forgetting it’s startup drive, which usually translates into lost evenings for me trying to either fix the issue or wiping things out and starting over. This time around I’ve found a plan C to fix things, so keep your fingers crossed that this is is the last time I have to do any major fixing for a while.

Tonight is also catch-up night over at The Outer Edges, as I posted pics from the last two shows I went to (The New Deal and Helmet respectively) and as I write I’m in the process of recording episode 16 of the posdcast. Only two weeks between episodes! See waht a broken ‘puter does to your recording schedule?

Also, I’ve come to the decision that I might want to shelve my freelance projects this winter so I can concentrate on my own things. Outside of the work I’m doing at Lime Group (which will start to see the light of day this month), I feel like nothing is getting done. Lesson to learn: don’t spread your schedule too thin, or else you won’t have enough time for anything.
